In June 2017 Idid my second international solo exhibition entitled “Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von” in Bremerhaven, Germany. As the first artist to exhibit in the newly-renovated Goethe45 gallery in Bremerhaven, it was a challenge and great pleasure to visually interpret some of Goethe’s most well-known literature. I used a combination of digital illustration, typography and spray cans to create canvas artworks, as well as illustrated objects inspired by and featuring some of Goethe’s verses. As my most successful exhibition thus far, it could only be possible due to the support of the i.f.a.. and the amazing team behind it all : Anne Schmeckies, Moritz Schmeckies, Phax Mulder, Galerie Goethe45, the community of Bremerhaven and of course my family and friends. Have a look below at our promo material, video trailer, photos and artwork from the event. Music by Grenville Williams and photography by Marina Ussat, with additional footage by Ina Prasse and video promo footage by Josh Prinsloo.

“Ooh La La” is the second track by South African rock legends WONDERboom, that I’ve had the honour of creating the music video for. Its also the second single from their upcoming new album, and it rocks incredibly hard. The song is loud and fast-paced with ripping guitars, mad vocals and killer solos that are classic WONDERboom. We created motion graphics out of photos, stencils and hand-drawn illustrations to reflect the song’s in-your-face attitude. Its the most-viewed WONDERboom video ever – in a career of 21 years – and the song is steadily climbing local charts towards number 1. Check out the video, and the massive fun we had shooting it, in the links below, and download the track right here on iTunes.

My first encounter with the German soul singer Sebó was around 2007 through my brother Grenville, as the two had worked together on an international music project. What inspired me most about Sebó was not his multi-instrumentalism, b-boy skills or golden voice, but his big heart, genuine spirit and how he shared his knowledge with everyone around him. After crossing paths many times later in life, we finally had the chance to work together creatively on his music video for “Endzeit”, which was released at the end of 2016. Shot in Hamburg, we created a blend of unsettling video collages to emphasise the message that the Earth is dying, and that it’s up to us to change how we live if we want to preserve our planet for future generations. Check Sebó out at sebomusik.de and at iTunes.
WONDERboom is South Africa’s longest-running rock band and is responsible for a long list of hits which have firmly been cemented as South African classics. In celebration of their 20 year anniversary, they wanted to have an animated music video created for the first single from their new album. For ‘Great Escape’ we scripted an epic action story around a couple escaping from an alien planet. We worked with countless illustrations to create a stop-motion style for the story which is set in outer space. Expect some intergalactic surfing, lots of explosions and outer space martial art battles. The single is available for download on iTunes and further insight into the making of the video, including interviews with the band, can be found in the behind-the-scenes-video down below. Massive thank you to Eleanor Barkes, Joshua Prinsloo, and Ashley Wedlake.

The German b-boy crew Escaflow has been at it for 11 years. Their anniversary event, ‘Schoolyard Breaks Vol. 2′ , was a high energy affair of b-boy battles, dance workshops and celebrating art and culture and the friends who share this passion. I created the promo poster and flyer, and also presented an art workshop, exploring the connection between visual art and b-boying. Together with the workshop crew, we created a stencilled artwork of legendary L.A. breaker Poe One from the Rock So Fresh, Zulu Kingz, and Style Elements crews. Poe travels the world giving master dance classes and workshops. We were fortunate to have him at 2016′s Schoolyard Breaks and surprised him with the artwork just before his workshop started. Check out the video, the poster, as well as some photos from the jam.
Organized and curated by Anne Schmeckies, I was invited to take part in a group exhibition in June 2016 at the Goethe45-Open-Air-Gallery in Bremerhaven, Germany. The outdoor gallery was created by 22 artists who created murals on connected outside walls. I had the privilege to create a combined artwork with CareOne and Daschu, two southern German artists who used their creativity to beautify the houses of residents in an under-privileged South African community in Grabouw, outside of Cape Town. Their work, titled ‘The Blue Area’, helped the people of the community take pride in their environment and receive hope through the power of art. Their piece at the Open-Air-Gallery in Bremerhaven is a continuation of this work and I had the opportunity to add my own style of painting, solidifying this cultural connection between South Africa and Germany. The video gives a little taste of the event in Bremerhaven, which included dance, live music, workshops and a photographic exhibition of Daschu and CareOne’s ‘Blue Area’ work in South Africa. Enjoy ! Audio production and sound design by Grenville Williams.

A project I am particularly proud of, ‘Fluid Faith’ is the product of crossing creative minds with fashion photographer extraordinaire from Austria, Peter Grillmair. In only his second year as a pro Pete was the winner of the scholarship ‘Selected 2013′ by the German Professional Imagers Club ( PIC ) and has had collaborations with dutch wunderkind Anouk Wipprecht, who designed Fergie’s superbowl dress. ‘Fluid Faith’ is our first collaboration and is set in the future. The moody editorial uses a combination of photography and illustration to show the fate of a woman who is to be abused for pharmaceutical tests, before she turns against her torturers… Working in Cape Town and Vienna over many months we realised the project with the Braingorillas production team and had it published online in ‘Volume’ Magazine, one of Vienna’s leading art, music and cultural platforms.
As the C1 group at Cape Town’s German Language Centre, partner of the Goethe Institute, we were given the task to design a poster about Munich as part of a competition among the different groups. The winning poster would be selected for display in one of the Language centre’s lecture rooms which is appropriately titled ‘München’. Our poster communicates how much we dig the Bavarian Capital and even contains a little Bauhaus influence. We of course decided to create an animated video of the design brainstorm. It was super-fun ! Check it out below, along with images of the final poster design. Special thanks to Douw Kruger, Marlan Perumal, Ulrich Grobler and the German Language Centre. Camera and sound by Carl Booysen, and music production by Grenville Daniel WIlliams.

As its pretty thrilling working on type projects, I had major fun producing this typographically-illustrated artwork for close personal friends who wanted to have their own customised world map. The concept was to represent each country of the world with a unique type style or illustration, but to completely mix up the positioning of the world’s countries within the global map. As we are all citizens of this world, we all share certain things in common, regardless of background and culture. And we all deserve the same respect and human dignity.

2015 Saw the release of Opel’s new Adam in South Africa. A sporty, tech-savvy city-slicker aimed at young, free-thinking, individual ” game-changers “, it was decided to market it by aligning the brand with a personality whom Opel believes displays these qualities and way of life. I was commissioned to create 10 large scale artworks that were exhibited in different high-traffic public venues in South Africa, to market the Adam. The highlight was creating a customised Roger Williams Adam by using different panels of the car as illustration canvasses. This emphasizes the fact that the Adam is fully customizable with the owner being able to select the colours of different elements of the car, to suit their individual style, taste and personality. Apart from working with the highly energetic, super-creative and award-winning team from 360 Degrees, what made the project a true creative pleasure was the fact that I could work within some of my favourite fields of art and design : illustration, graphics, mural art and live visuals / digital drawing at the Adam’s launch event, the Opel / LISOF Fashion Collab in Johannesburg. View the animated video below as well as detailed images of the artwork and the customised Opel Adam.

I was commisioned by internationally renowned, multi-awarded artist, director and playwright Brett Bailey, to create the artwork and animations for his radical take on Verdi’s Macbeth, which premiered in Cape Town before touring Europe in 2014 and New Zealand in 2015. Described as South Africa’s most exciting and provocative theatre director, Bailey has set his version of the classic Shakespearean tragedy in Central Africa : Conflict rages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as African warlord Commander Macbeth and his ambitious wife murder the king and unleash a trail of horrific destruction among multinational treachery, ethnic warfare and brutal militia. Inspired by bold African design elements, the opera’s animated visuals are combined with exquisite stage and lighting design to create a surreal visual realm of communication. Much more important though than the striking images, is the vision and ultimately the message of the work which made it one of the most important projects I have worked on thus far. The show received five stars in London and has been described as ” Visually and musically breathtaking ” ( Sunday Independent ) and as ” A séance where high Western art meets pan-African ethos..” ( The Star ). “Safety first, Dude” is a custom skate deck that was created as a birthday gift / going-away present for Fabrizio Minutolo, the Italian-Spanish-African-Australian-German founder of “Chill Mode 2000″ and master of the “Maximum Chill” ! Illustrating Fab’s passion for the ocean, diving, photography, skating, surfing, animals, fauna and flora, the design was somewhat inspired by the oldskool typography-filled surf & skate designs of Jim Phillips, especially in the bold colour usage and image-heavy layout. This in turn highlights Fab’s colourful, permanently happy & super-chilled personality. As the ultimate hombre and one of the coolest humans alive to all who know him, we say maximum respect to the original Von Dudenstein ! Big thanks go out to Siraaj Petersen and Shannon Loxton for assisting to get this one out in under 4 days.
“I Love Hip Hop” is an annual Dutch music festival which takes place in Den Haag and features some of the most groundbreaking and cutting-edge European Hip Hop acts. Graffiti is one of the core elements of Hip Hop and the festival always has a fresh line-up of visual artists creating murals while the music performances take place. During 2014 I was invited as one of 7 artists to create live, custom artwork inspired by the love of Hip Hop culture, music and the consciousness it promotes. June 20th 2014 sees the opening of Crossroad in Amsterdam. Following the very successful debut of Crossroad in Cape Town, I have teamed up with Dutch organisation Manage Your Art, to present a solo exhibition of some of my music posters. Poster art is one of my favourite design disciplines, and because music has played such a strong role in the Crossroad project, it was the natural choice of theme to use in the project’s Amsterdam showcase. Crossroad Amsterdam opens on 20 June 2014 at 21:00 at De Duivel, 87 Reguliersdwarsstraat, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. View the official Crossroad Exhibition site at www.crossroad2014.org.

It is an honour to share this occasion with the highly accomplished Bremen-based artist. Inspired by the vast amount of choices all people face in life and how these influence our realities, the exhibition serves as a platform for creating crossroads on many different levels. All proceeds will be donated to Capetonian NGO’s Funimfundo Preschool and Young In Prison. The musical crossroad will be provided by South Africa’s DJ Azuhl and Germany’s DJ Phax Mulder at the event’s afterparty at True Italic, 15 Bree Street, Cape Town. When tasked with the rebranding of a well known event technical company from rock and roll to corporate, a fine balance must be maintained to keep the spirit of the brand, while creating a slick and powerful identity. This was exactly the goal with the branding of Golden Circle, formerly known as Hellfire Sound and Lighting. The company is one of South Africa’s leaders when it comes to the highest quality sound, lighting and related AV requirements for festivals, corporate and music industry events. The flame from the original identity was kept, while the overall look and feel was polished to reflect the company’s unmatched level of production and service. For my series of international solo exhibitions entitled “Alles Roger”, I once again drew inspiration largely from music. The struggle for freedom in different social and personal contexts has emerged as a key theme in the work, and it is explored in a variety of graphic scenes. “Alles Roger” debuts at the internationally renowned Kunsthalle Bremerhaven with a fusion of live music and visual art, while the charming city of Vienna and the peaceful southern German town of Ladenburg, host its final European showings. Visit www.kunstverein-bremerhaven.de for more information, and enjoy the Alles Roger promo video, as well as a preview of the soon to be unveiled work, down below.

Retro, sporty and old school were the key words during the creation of a custom helmet for French sports personality Marguerite (Margot) Laffite. Margot, the daughter of famous F1 driver Jacques Laffite, is not only an experienced competition driver, but also works as a journalist and television presenter for Eurosport/Sunday F1, amongst other shows. The helmet had to suit Margot’s fashionable yet simple style, but at the same time express the racy nature of her personality. A logo consisting of an M and a daisy (“marguerite” in French ) was created, and incorporated in the back of the design. With a slick green, grey and red colour combination, Laffite’s helmet has a classic finish and launches her into the pole position of style. Margot Laffite Facebook page
